[ROUSING CLASSICAL MUSIC PLAYING] GUSTAVO DUDAMEL: EXPERIENCE THE SOARING THUNDER OF BEETHOVEN... AND THE HEARTBREAK OF "SWAN LAKE."
[ORCHESTRA PLAYING "SWAN LAKE"] DUDAMEL: JOIN ME IN CONCERT AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL.
[APPLAUSE] GUSTAVO: HERE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, MUSIC HAS NO BOUNDARIES.
THE BOWL IS WHERE MUSIC BELONGS TO ALL OF US.
WHEN THE MUSIC PLAYS, EVERYONE IS RIGHT WHERE THEY BELONG.
I AM GUSTAVO DUDAMEL, MUSIC AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC.
TODAY, I INVITE YOU TO JOIN ME AT MY SUMMER HOME--THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL.
[CROWD CHEERING] DUDAMEL: THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC PLAYED ITS FIRST CONCERT AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL ON EASTER MORNING, 1921.
BACK THEN, THE BOWL DIDN'T HAVE BENCHES OR A PROPER STAGE.
AT THAT FIRST CONCERT, THOUSANDS OF ANGELENOS STOOD IN THE KNEE-HIGH WEEDS AS THE SUN ROSE AND WAGNER'S "PARSIFAL" PLAYED.
THE CONCERT WAS ORGANIZED BY A YOUNG MUSIC TEACHER NAMED ARTIE MASON CARTER.
SHE BELIEVED THAT CLASSICAL MUSIC SHOULD BE FOR EVERYONE AND NOT JUST A SELECT FEW.
SHE RAISED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS PENNY BY PENNY AND EVEN SOLD HER OWN ENGAGEMENT RING TO STAGE THE BOWL'S FIRST SEASON OF "SYMPHONIES UNDER THE STARS" IN 1922.
THE MUSIC HASN'T STOPPED PLAYING SINCE.
TODAY, OUR PROGRAM GETS UNDERWAY WITH A BOWL FAVORITE SINCE 1941-- SELECTIONS FROM TCHAIKOVSKY'S TIMELESS "SWAN LAKE."
[MUSIC BEGINS] ["SWAN LAKE" MUSIC CONTINUES] [MUSIC ENDS, APPLAUSE] DUDAMEL: "SWAN LAKE" IS A BEAUTIFUL PIECE, BUT YOU CAN'T DO IT JUSTICE WITHOUT A SWAN QUEEN, AND WE WERE FORTUNATE TO GET THE VERY BEST--MY FRIEND, MISTY COPELAND.
MISTY MADE HISTORY BY BECOMING THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMAN TO DANCE THE ROLE WITH THE AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE.
I HAD A CHANCE TO TALK TO HER ABOUT THE ROLE AND PERFORMING AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL.
MY VERY DEAR MISTY, HOW ARE YOU?
COPELAND: I AM SO GOOD.
I AM SO HONORED TO BE HERE.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.
DUDAMEL: OH, PLEASE.
WHAT MEMORIES WE HAVE FROM NOT SUCH A LONG TIME AGO, BUT IT LOOKS LONG TIME AGO, NO?
COPELAND: YEAH, YEAH, IT'S--IT WAS 3 YEARS AGO NOW, BUT IT FEELS LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY.
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU AGAIN AND EXPERIENCE THAT AGAIN.
DUDAMEL: YES.
MISTY, YOU DID HERE--YOU WERE DANCING "SWAN LAKE," AND I KNOW THAT THAT IS A VERY SPECIAL ROLE, YOU KNOW, AND I WANT TO KNOW, WHAT IS THAT ROLE FOR YOU, WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU?
COPELAND: WELL, I THINK THAT "SWAN LAKE" IS JUST KIND OF, LIKE, THE EPITOME OF--OF WHAT A BALLERINA IS.
FOR ME, IT WAS THE FIRST BALLET I EVER PERFORMED IN WITH AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE, AND I THINK IT WAS MAYBE 15 YEARS LATER, ONCE I WAS A PROFESSIONAL, WAS THE FIRST TIME I DANCED THE LEAD OF ODETTE/ODILE.
AND, BEING A BLACK WOMAN, THERE ARE VERY FEW THAT EXIST IN THE CLASSICAL WORLD, PERIOD, BUT VERY FEW WHO HAVE DONE THE FULL LENGTH AS THE LEAD.
SO, TO BE THE FIRST TO DO THAT WITH AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE, AND WHAT IT REPRESENTED FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY, WAS JUST REALLY POWERFUL, SO THAT WILL ALWAYS HOLD A SPECIAL PLACE, LIKE, IN MY HEART AND FOR WHERE MY CAREER WENT AFTER I DID THAT ROLE FOR THE FIRST TIME.
SO TO BE ABLE TO STEP ONTO THE STAGE AND HAVE YOU THERE... DUDAMEL: HEH HEH!
COPELAND: AND YOUR INCREDIBLE MUSICIANS BEHIND ME, IT WAS A VERY EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE, AND I JUST REMEMBER THE AUDIENCE WAS JUST SO INTO IT, AND IT JUST MAKES ME FEEL LIKE THERE'S STILL SO MUCH HOPE FOR THE ARTS BECAUSE IF YOU PUT PEOPLE IN THE ROOM, AND THEY ACTUALLY HAVE ACCESS TO IT AND EXPERIENCE IT, THEY FALL IN LOVE WITH IT.
IT'S AMAZING TO HEAR YOUNG PEOPLE SCREAMING THE SAME WAY THEY WOULD AT, LIKE, A JUSTIN BIEBER CONCERT.
HA HA!
DUDAMEL: YES, EXACTLY.
I AGREE.
I THINK ART IN GENERAL IS A VERY IMPORTANT TOOL FOR SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION AND, YOU KNOW, TO GIVE THE CHANCE TO THE NEW GENERATIONS, YOU KNOW, TO HAVE ACCESS TO THE REAL BEAUTY AS A PERFORMER, AS AN AUDIENCE, AS AN INTER--CONNECTING TO EACH OTHER.
I WANT TO ASK YOU BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THAT IS SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT AND, FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE, WHICH IS YOUR ADVICE, YOU KNOW, FOR THEM, YOU KNOW?
AND THAT--THIS IS ALWAYS, YOU KNOW, A QUESTION, YOU KNOW, FROM SOMEBODY THAT IS THERE, WHERE THEY WANT TO ARRIVE.
COPELAND: I'M OFTEN EXPRESSING TO YOUNG PEOPLE THAT IT'S SO POWERFUL TO BE AN INDIVIDUAL, AND IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND TO EMBRACE THAT.
I THINK THAT SOMETHING THAT'S SO AMAZING ABOUT THE ARTS IS THAT NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY TO BE LIKE SOMEONE ELSE, YOU'RE SO VULNERABLE AND NAKED WHEN YOU'RE ONSTAGE AND WHEN YOU'RE IN FRONT OF PEOPLE, AND PEOPLE ARE GOING TO SEE WHO YOU ARE, AND I THINK THAT'S A POWERFUL THING.
SO I'M JUST, YOU KNOW, NOT TO COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHER PEOPLE, TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, TO USE THE RESOURCES AROUND YOU, MENTORS, AND TO ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE OPEN ENOUGH TO RECEIVE GUIDANCE.
DUDAMEL: WONDERFUL.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MISTY, AND I SEND YOU, YOU KNOW, ALL MY LOVE AND STAY SAFE AND KEEP DANCING.
COPELAND: YES, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
DUDAMEL: THANK YOU, MISTY.
FROM THE MOMENT I SAW MISTY DANCE, I WANTED HER TO COME TO THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL.
SHE JOINS AN INCREDIBLE LIST OF DANCERS WHO HAVE PERFORMED AT THE BOWL OVER THE YEARS, INCLUDING MARIA TALLCHIEF, MICHIO ITO, AND MIKHAIL BARYSHNIKOV.
[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE] HERE, SHE'S PERFORMING THE WHITE SWAN SOLO FROM "SWAN LAKE" WITH CHOREOGRAPHY BY MARIUS PETIPA.
[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE ABATE] [MUSIC BEGINS] ["SWAN LAKE" MUSIC CONTINUES] [MUSIC ENDS] ["SWAN LAKE" MUSIC CONTINUES] [MUSIC ENDS] [CHEERING AND APPLAUSE] DUDAMEL: THERE IS NO ONE QUITE LIKE MISTY COPELAND, AND IN THE WORLD OF MUSIC, THERE IS NO ONE QUITE LIKE RISING STAR PABLO FERRANDEZ.
PABLO MADE HIS HOLLYWOOD BOWL DEBUT WITH US LAST SUMMER, PERFORMING DVORAK'S CELLO CONCERTO.
[MUSIC BEGINS] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [MUSIC ENDS] [CHEERING AND APPLAUSE] DUDAMEL: PABLO HAD AN INCREDIBLE CONNECTION WITH THE ORCHESTRA, AND THAT IS WHERE WE WILL TURN NEXT, TO THE FRIENDS WHO JOIN ME ON THE STAGE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL EACH SUMMER.
AARON COPLAND'S "FANFARE FOR THE COMMON MAN" WAS WRITTEN DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR AS A TRIBUTE TO THE EVERYDAY HEROISM HAPPENING ON THE HOME FRONT INSTEAD OF THE BATTLEFIELD.
HERE NOW IS THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC PERFORMING "FANFARE FOR THE COMMON MAN."
[MUSIC BEGINS] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [MUSIC ENDS] [CHEERING AND APPLAUSE] DUDAMEL: I LOVE PERFORMING AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL WITH MY FRIENDS IN THE ORCHESTRA AND PERFORMERS LIKE PABLO AND MISTY.
I ALSO LOVE PERFORMING WITH MY YOUNGEST COLLABORATORS--THE INCREDIBLE STUDENTS OF THE YOUTH ORCHESTRA LOS ANGELES, BETTER KNOWN AS YOLA.
MY VERY FIRST PERFORMANCE AS MUSIC DIRECTOR OF THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC WAS NOT WITH THE ORCHESTRA.
IT WAS WITH THE YOUNG MUSICIANS OF YOLA, AND IT TOOK PLACE RIGHT HERE, ON THE STAGE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL.
THAT NIGHT, WE PERFORMED "ODE TO JOY" FROM BEETHOVEN'S NINTH SYMPHONY FOR A SOLD-OUT AUDIENCE.
NEARLY A DECADE LATER, I REVISITED THE PIECE WE PERFORMED THAT NIGHT.
HERE IS THE "FINALE" FROM BEETHOVEN'S NINTH.
[MUSIC BEGINS] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [RYAN SPEEDO GREEN SINGING IN GERMAN] [RYAN SPEEDO GREEN SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGS IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGS IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [GREEN, MAN, AND WOMAN SINGING IN GERMAN] [WOMAN JOINING IN IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [WOMAN JOINING IN IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [MAN SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [MAN SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [SINGING IN GERMAN] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC CONTINUES] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC LOUDER AND QUICKER] [CHORUS SINGING IN GERMAN] [MUSIC LOUDER AND QUICKER] [MUSIC ENDS] [CHEERING AND APPLAUSE] DUHAMEL: BEETHOVEN'S NINTH CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL.
THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL WAS CREATED BY PEOPLE WHO BELIEVED THAT EVERYONE DESERVED ACCESS TO THE ARTS.
THAT IS SOMETHING I BELIEVE IN, TOO.
CLASSICAL MUSIC IS FOR EVERYONE, AND MY FRIENDS AND I COME TOGETHER EACH SUMMER TO INVITE MORE AND MORE PEOPLE INTO THE EXPERIENCE OF BEAUTIFUL MUSIC UNDER THE STARS.
WE HOPE YOU WILL JOIN US ONE DAY, TOO.
TICKETS START AT $1.00, AND WE PUT ON A PRETTY GOOD SHOW.
SEE YOU NEXT TIME IN CONCERT AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL.
