Fine arts students have explored making paints with egg yolks.
There's a big interest in making textile pigments using plant material.
- Well all you have to do is shake the plant.
- Great Joan Takayama-Ogawa has shown great commitment to sustainability and she's working with students to create planters.
The planters are made from Mission clay and it used to be the old sewer pipe clay.
They don't make sewer pipes out of clay anymore so I think using this sort of discarded industrial material and repurposing it as a planter is really brilliant.
We'll have our first tomatoes in a couple weeks.
I thought the sewer pipe clay would hold water inside and then I could reduce water consumption in the planters.
Joan teaches a a second class that deals more directly with climate change.
The name of the course is avoiding climate disaster and many people are a little surprised because they associate me with clay but I like to think of myself as the unnatural science teacher.
I asked the art students to create posters about all these contributors to climate change and to make posters using the most impactful visuals so that everyone can understand it and I thought it came back beautiful and also some of the posters are in different languages so we have Korean and Spanish which I thought was pretty terrific.
Joan is just so passionate teaching or talking about the climate crisis.
It's really inspiring for myself as a student because I feel like okay now I'm excited about what we're talking about now I want to be really engaged.
Well we had to plant a lot of seeds for people to change.
I think that will be our future for artists to scatter as many seeds as possible about climate change.
