They appear to be, maybe, sheets from a music book that a choir may have used.
Possibly, they're on, uh, some kind of animal skin.
GUEST 2: And we think they have some religious stories to tell.
This is, we think, St. Agnes.
APPRAISER: Mm-hmm.
GUEST 2: And they were trying to burn her, and she wouldn't burn.
And then...
GUEST 1: We think this is Mary.
GUEST 2: This is an icon to Mary.
Right.
GUEST 1: I'm assuming it's Mary, because her face is so worn away.
GUEST 2: Right.
GUEST 1: And I'm assuming it's from veneration.
APPRAISER: Well, that's exactly right.
They're pages from what we all a missal.
You can see the musical staves here.
It was a choir book, and they were large so the entire congregation could see them.
And they're probably French, around 16th century, 1550.
GUEST 2: Okay.
APPRAISER: These beautiful miniatures with the gilts and the illumination, and Mary, the intricate work, that's exactly what collectors want.
So they're very common without the miniatures, but with the miniatures they become valuable.
GUEST 1: Okay.
APPRAISER: What did you pay for them?
GUEST 1: Um...
GUEST 2: $150 apiece.
GUEST 1: Yeah.
APPRAISER: So you have $300 into them.
GUEST 1: Yeah, I actually didn't have enough money at the time, and I called my sister.
APPRAISER: So it was a collaborative effort.
That’s good, yeah.
GUEST 2: Yeah, she was an art student at the time, so...
GUEST 1: Yeah.
APPRAISER: Well, you did very well.
These are exactly what people are looking for if they want one example of a miniature, especially this large.
They're really well done as well.
GUEST 1: Okay.
APPRAISER: Um, I would very easily put these in an auction at $3,000 to $4,000 apiece.
GUEST 1: Wow.
APPRAISER: And expect them to do probably even a little bit better than that.
GUEST 1: Okay.
APPRAISER: So you guys did very well.
GUEST 1: Yeah.
