Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Did a word that's important to you go missing?
- And now all you can feel, do, or think is the opposite of that word?
- Then call us!
I'm Sly.
- And I'm Gabby.
We're word detectives and we solve- - [Both] Word mysteries!
- Together we run the Wordsville Online Detective Agency.
- We'll find your missing word fast.
- Not to mention press briskly.
- And swiftly!
- Yeah, we're really good with words.
- [Children] Wordsville!
- Sly, what does competition mean?
- A situation where a person or a group tries to do better than someone else or another group.
- You okay?
You're usually way more into it when we practice for our word trivia competition.
- Yeah, I just don't wanna compete in it anymore.
- I don't feel like competing either, which is weird.
We're usually competitive and like to win.
Is it a word mystery?
- Probably, which means someone should be calling to report a missing word any minute.
- Huh, no one's calling.
I guess it's up to us to start investigating.
If competition is missing, we should start with- - The most competitive person in Wordsville?
- Athlete Glory!
I'll see if she posted anything to Wordbook today.
Oh look!
- [Sly] She wrote, "Getting ready for my basketball games with Firefighter Ember and Artist Clay."
I'm zooming in.
Look, there's something written on the scoreboard.
- It says competition.
I wonder where that scoreboard is now.
Let's give Athlete Glory a call.
- Oh, hey Word Detectives.
What's up?
- Hey.
Where's your scoreboard?
- What scoreboard?
- The one with the word competition on it.
- The one that was in the photo you posted on Wordbook this morning.
- Oh, that scoreboard.
Looks like it's gone.
- So this is a word mystery.
- Since your scoreboard is gone, the word competition has left Wordsville.
- [Sly] And nobody could be competitive, which means eager to try to win against people who have similar skills to yours.
- Oh, is that why I don't feel like competing in anything?
- And neither do we.
What happened after you posted the photo?
- Nothing.
Nothing at all.
- But you wrote in your caption that you were getting ready for some basketball games.
- Oh right, I did play basketball.
How could I forget that?
You sure the word remember hasn't gone missing?
- Pretty sure it's just the word competition.
- Tell us what happened and Sly will animate it.
- [Sly] Recap time!
- [Artist Glory] So Firefighter Ember and Artist Clay came by for our weekly basketball games.
I played Firefighter Ember first and then I played against Artist Clay.
Afterwards, oh yeah, they both asked for a cup of water, so I went to get it.
When I got back, they were gone.
But I didn't notice the competition scoreboard was missing until you pointed it out, so I don't know what happened.
- We do.
One of them took your competition scoreboard.
Can you show us the scene of the mystery?
- Um, sure.
Here's where the scoreboard used to be.
- [Sly] I'm saving a screenshot for our case notes.
We'll be in touch.
- Okay.
- Word trivia competition practice time!
Practicing helps you compete!
- Oh, I remember making that reminder and now I don't care about competing.
- Let's start our case notes so we can solve this.
What happened?
- Someone took Athlete Glory's competition scoreboard so now no one is competitive.
- The gym is where it happened when Athlete Glory got water for the suspects.
- Firefighter Ember and Artist Clay.
Now to find out who did it, how, and why.
- [Gabby] The clues are three water bottles.
- But why did they ask for cups of water when they already had water bottles?
- Maybe Firefighter Ember can help us get to the bottom of this.
- Oh!
Hey Word Detectives.
- Hi Firefighter Ember.
We're wondering if you like competing.
- I do, if whoever I'm competing against has the same skills.
That makes it competitive.
Like when I hike with Vet Wilder.
We're both great hikers and we compete to see who can hike the hardest trails.
- But your one-on-one basketball games with Athlete Glory are different?
- Well, you know, Athlete Glory is so much better at basketball than I am.
But playing with her is not very competitive or fun.
- Why did you ask for a cup of water at the gym when you brought your own water bottle?
- I asked for a cup of water?
That doesn't ring my fire alarm.
Oh, (laughs) sorry.
My memory's a bit hazy.
I did ask for a cup of water.
- Did you just get a message from someone and change your story?
- No!
Oh, do you hear that alarm?
(imitates alarm) Gotta go!
- I wonder if Artist Clay feels the same way as Firefighter Amber.
- I knew I'd be hearing from you Word Detectives.
I mean, greetings.
- Artist Clay, do you like playing basketball against Athlete Glory?
- It's not a fun competition when she's making all the baskets and the only way I can do that is by weaving ones.
See?
- Cool basket.
So Athlete Glory's really good at basketball, huh?
- Too good.
- Just one more thing.
Did you ask her for a cup of water today?
- Why would I ask for water when I brought my own water bottle?
Actually, forget what I said.
I did ask for a cup of water.
- Did you just get a message?
- What?
No.
It's my laundry timer.
Gotta go put my basket to good use!
- It's case notes time- - Time to practice, practice, practice for the word trivia competition.
- It's okay, we'll be ready to compete once we crack this case.
- [Sly] Both suspects had the same story.
- [Gabby] The basketball games weren't competitive or fun because Athlete Glory was the only one scoring.
- [Sly] Both suspects also said they didn't ask for water.
- Until they got a message, (gasps) then they changed their stories!
- There's only one person who could be sending those messages.
- Let's show them how it happened!
- Now presenting the word mystery animated reenactment of the case of the competition cancellation.
- Watch out.
Ooh, nothing but net!
Coming through.
Did you see that?
Look, I can do it without looking.
It looks like I win this time.
- This time?!
Don't you mean every single time?
- Are you two upset?
- Well, since you mentioned it, these games aren't very competitive.
- Or fun.
- I know.
Let's play without the scoreboard.
I'll lock it away and we'll play for fun.
The scoreboard won't matter because we're not competing.
- That actually sounds fun.
- Yeah, good idea!
- So Athlete Glory is who took the scoreboard.
- Okay, you're right.
I orchestrated it all!
- But all three of you were in on it.
- Your games weren't very competitive or fun, so you all agreed to lock away the scoreboard.
- Then Athlete Glory sent you messages to make sure you told the same story about water.
- That's why and how you did it.
- You're mostly right, but I actually did it because they didn't like playing with me.
And even though I missed competing, I was afraid that if I returned the competition scoreboard, my friends would never play with me again.
- I'm sorry we made you feel that way.
But it's hard when you're so good.
- And we wanna have fun competing.
- I have an idea that can solve this.
- But first, let's get the word competition back to Wordsville.
- I'm itching to compete again.
I'll unlock competition right away.
- How about from now on, you play two on one?
- Athlete Glory against both Firefighter Ember and Artist Clay?
- That way it will be more competitive.
- I love that idea.
- [All] Thanks Word Detectives!
- Solved it.
- We did it again Sly.
- The world trivia competition is starting now!
You've got this.
- I'm ready and I'm glad I'm feeling competitive again.
- Me too!
Let's go Sly.
