[ Cheers and applause continue ] ♪♪ For 70 years, the Queen saw herself as the protector of the crown, through every era... through every scandal.
♪♪ This is the story of the British Royal Family... [ Cheers and applause ] ♪♪ ...told only by those who really know... [ Cheers and applause continue ] ...from the head of the British Army to the lady-in-waiting... from the head of MI6 to the man who broke in to the Queen's bedroom.
♪♪ -[ Speaks indistinctly ] -This is "The Real Crown."
[ Indistinct conversation ] ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ -There's been an assassination attempt on Princess Anne.
-Princess Margaret has decided to get a divorce.
♪♪ -Congratulations.
-Thank you very much.
-Thank you.
♪♪ -You're a monster.
♪♪ -This.
This.
-It's called a camera.
[ Camera shutters clicking ] -The biggest audience in television history -- 1/6 of the world's population.
-Excuse me.
I want to protect children.
♪♪ ♪♪ [ Camera shutters clicking ] -Wills?
-Not many people have asked if I'm okay.
♪♪ -Can you recover from this, sir?
♪♪ ♪♪ -Today is the biggest day in young Prince Charles's life, as he's about to be crowned Prince of Wales.
He and the rest of the Royal Family are on a train to Caernarfon, where the ceremony is about to take place.
♪♪ [ Gulls crying ] It's the first step in his journey towards becoming king.
What they don't know is that four bombs have been planted by Welsh nationalists in and around the ceremony.
♪♪ [ Explosion in distance ] ♪♪ -Well, I was on the royal train with the Prince of Wales down to Caernarfon for the investiture.
♪♪ Very unusual circumstance.
And so the mood in Wales was not one of universal approval.
There was a very active movement for independence.
[ Crowd shouting indistinctly ] ♪♪ -Is there any one of you who is against it?
You are?
Now tell me -- Let me come in there and tell me why.
-Because he's English.
The Prince is English.
-The train which brought us all down from London was very heavily policed to make sure that there was no assault on that.
-[ Man shouting indistinctly ] ♪♪ -When the Queen arrives, she is told about the bomb threat.
One has already exploded.
♪♪ Now the police are searching for others.
♪♪ -Can I ask you what it was?
-No.
I'm sorry.
I can say nothing at this stage.
I'm sorry.
-Was it an explosive device, sir?
-I'm sorry.
I can say nothing at this stage.
-Thank you.
♪♪ -The Queen shows no sign of emotion as she decides to continue with the ceremony.
♪♪ -Smiling.
♪♪ With him is the Secretary of State for Wales.
[ Cheers and applause ] ♪♪ -Prince Charles was accompanied in a carriage through the town to the castle during the course of which another bomb went off.
[ Cheers and applause continue ] [ Explosion in distance ] -In the carriage with Charles is Welsh secretary George Thomas.
♪♪ -It was quite clearly a bomb, but Prince Charles just looked at me and said, "What was that, Mr.
Thomas?"
So I said, "Royal salute, Prince Charles."
And he looked at me with a question mark in his eyes, and he said, "Peculiar royal salute."
And I said, "Peculiar people up here, sir."
I had to say something [Chuckles] to cover up.
[ Cannons firing ] ♪♪ None of us knew if the next bomb that would go off would get the coach.
There was a certain tension in the air.
[ Cannon fires ] ♪♪ -I, Charles, Prince of Wales, do become your liege man of life and limb, and of earthly worship, and faith and truth I will bear unto thee, to live and die, against all manner of folks.
♪♪ -The whole thing was devoted to getting over the message that her son, presumed successor, and he was devoting his life to support and help and prop her up.
[ Applause ] [ Mozart's "Requiem in D Minor, Lacrimosa dies illa" plays ] -One bomb fails to detonate, and the other explodes days after the ceremony, seriously injuring a child.
[ Music continues ] The stress of Charles's investiture led the Queen to spend the next few days in bed with nervous exhaustion.
[ Music continues ] It's the only time in her reign that she's done that.
[ Song ends ] [ T. Rex's "Children of the Revolution" plays ] And as the 1970s begin, the Royal Family feels ever more out of place in the modern world.
-♪ Well, you can bump and grind ♪ ♪ It is good for your mind ♪ ♪ Well, you can twist ♪ ♪ And shout ♪ -Britain is in the grip of a fuel crisis.
-♪ Let it all hang out ♪ -So switch off some power.
-♪ But you won't fool ♪ -Low pay... -♪ The children ♪ ♪ Of the revolution ♪ -...strikes... inflation.
-♪ No, no, no ♪ [ Instrumental break ] ♪ Wow!
♪ [ Song ends ] -I know that everyone does -- does ask you, and I'm almost embarrassed at having to ask you that again, but if I don't, people will say, "She wasn't a very good reporter."
-[ Chuckles ] -There are those who say that the monarchy is an anachronism, that its day is over, that it serves no purpose other than a kind of tradition and stability.
Um, obviously, you don't feel that way, and you see it from, of course, a very different point of view.
What do you think its -- its main, uh, purpose and advantage is in this day for your country?
-[ Exhales sharply ] Lord.
I suppose I'll really... -Should I make it simpler?
-...write a book about it.
-Um, I think it's a perfectly valid system for -- for producing a head of state.
[ Bird singing ] -Both the Queen and Prince Philip feel the need to train Charles to be king.
-Obviously, it's not all honey being royalty, and the early, carefree years of childhood pass all too quickly.
And if you're heir to the throne, responsibilities loom pretty large pretty soon.
-Prince Philip believes Charles needs toughening up, so he gets him to do endurance training and takes him hunting.
But Charles often goes without a gun.
His real love is the cello.
♪♪ The Queen ensures that Andrew has an easier path.
During his years at prep school, he's barely ever told off.
His father, Philip, calls him a natural boss.
♪♪ -Uh, you're so much more relaxed with the younger ones, and, somehow, you've spoiled them slightly more, I think, probably, and I think, probably, that [Chuckles ] happened.
♪♪ -While the pressure and the spotlight is always on Charles, publicly, he puts a brave face on it and seems at ease with it all.
-Your grandfather King George VI once said, "We're not so much a family.
We're more a firm."
Do you feel a member of a firm?
-Um, a family firm.
-A royal firm.
-[ Chuckles ] -[ Chuckles ] A family firm.
I think that's probably put it right.
I suppose so, I think in the sense that one's all doing the same job.
Um, I like to think of it as more as a -- as a family rather than a firm, I think.
♪♪ -But as Charles turns 21, it's dawning on him the extent to which his life has been predetermined.
♪♪ -It's an ordinary family but an extraordinary family at the same time.
I think the, um -- the question about the tension between duty and the things I'd like to do happen to us all.
We all have to wrestle with questions like that.
What you choose shapes your destiny.
But this is not any old Tom, Dick, or Harry down the road, you know?
This is the heir to the throne.
[ Elvis Presley's "It's Now or Never" plays ] -Charles is presented to the public as a confident, active young prince.
-There can be few people in the world who are so famous for a job they haven't even started.
When he does start, Prince Charles will be the 64th sovereign in a family line stretching back over a thousand years.
He may not succeed to the job until he's over 70, but he might be king tomorrow morning.
He is heir to 13 realms.
-But underneath, he's a thoughtful, contemplative character.
And he's coming to terms with the life of duty to which he is locked in.
-You get the idea that you have a certain duty and responsibility.
You know you must do this and you must do that because of who you are.
-Charles becomes interested in what it would be like if one gave up a life of duty.
-[ Speaking indistinctly ] ♪♪ And on the 3rd of October, 1970, he decides to find out.
While the Queen entertains American President Nixon, Charles takes the opportunity to arrange a secret meeting in Paris with someone he's become intrigued by... ♪♪ ...the only other person on Earth that has been in his position... ♪♪ ...his great-uncle, the former king who decided he'd rather not be king if it meant he could marry the woman he loved.
He gave up the crown and left his country.
♪♪ -I happened to be in Paris, and I was told that Prince Charles had come into Paris, and there seemed to be no reason for it, and it hadn't been announced beforehand.
Charles was fascinated by this character from history.
He abdicated.
He nearly caused the end of the House of Windsor.
When Charles met David, they would have had much to discuss.
♪♪ -The former king always claimed that he could live with his decision.
He and Wallis Simpson tried to present as though they have no regrets, although he lets his wife do most of the talking.
-We've been very happy.
-Yes.
Very happy.
-Certain things, yes, I wish it could have been different, but, I mean, I'm extremely happy, and...
But I have great fun.
-We have a lot of fun.
-But Charles sees a man who has never recovered from it.
He sees that the servants are dressed up as Buckingham Palace footmen... ♪♪ ...and on the table, the red dispatch box still labeled "The King."
Later, in his diary, Charles makes a poignant record of his visit.
-"The whole thing seemed so tragic -- the existence, the people, and the atmosphere -- that I was relieved to escape it."
♪♪ -Perhaps as a result of her uncle giving up the crown, the Queen has embraced her life of duty and shows herself as relaxed in the role.
-Find something to -- for the, um, sapphires.
-She makes it look effortless, partly because she's been schooled in it since she was a child.
♪♪ While her sister played with toys, she was being given lessons in the Constitution.
-If you're the firstborn, you are the heir.
But if you happen to be a Princess Margaret, if you happen to be a Princess Anne, if you happen to be a Prince Andrew, there's no ready role for you.
You have to find your own way, and it's so difficult because you're supposed to be special and you're treated as special and privileged, but what do you do?
♪♪ One of the particular aspects of being distant from the throne -- it did give you greater freedom to operate.
So, Margaret did have greater freedom, but, on the other hand, it created dangers for her, as well.
♪♪ -In the 1950s, Margaret fell in love with an Air Force group captain, Peter Townsend, but he was divorced with kids, so the Queen sent him abroad as a way of preventing their marriage.
It was a decision that would cast a long shadow over the Queen's relationship with her sister.
♪♪ -These rules have gone on for centuries to protect.
The most important thing is the crown, and she always had to bear that in mind, even if it was your sister wanting to marry somebody who was divorced with children.
The monarchy came first.
♪♪ -When she falls in love with society photographer Tony Armstrong-Jones, he is deemed suitable and they are allowed to marry.
♪♪ He is not divorced, but he has deeper secret issues.
As well as having a relationship with Margaret, he also has a mistress... who is about to give birth to his child.
♪♪ -Margaret Rose, wilt thou obey him and serve him, keep thee only unto him, so long as ye both shall live?
-I will.
-And Tony also has male lovers... ♪♪ ...including Nicky Haslam.
♪♪ -Tony was a terrific seducer.
Well, he seduced -- Well, he could seduce that table leg.
♪♪ He was terrific fun, Tony.
He was a sort of devil incarnate but a charmer of everything, and -- and he was naughty but wonderful.
I mean "naughty" in the nicest sense.
-Who are you?
-How are you?
-Fine, thank you.
-I was so surprised that it went that far, as far as marriage.
-Once the marriage started to go wrong, I was there for her when she was having a difficult time.
I did see the way Tony treated her, which I didn't like at all.
-We were at a party, and Tony was -- had one of those matches that light anywhere.
You know, you strike them on -- Old-fashioned matches.
And he sort of lightly was throwing them at Princess Margaret.
And she said, "Oh, Tony, don't do that.
You could have set my dress on fire."
And he said, "Good thing, too.
I've always hated that material."
♪♪ -I mean, the thing about Tony was he's so spiteful and did these horrible things.
He used to leave these little notes among her gloves or handkerchiefs, and she said she didn't dare ever open them.
So the maid always had to open them and give her gloves or her handkerchief or whatever she wanted.
One of them said, "You look like a Jewish manicurist, and I hate you."
♪♪ I don't know why he behaved like that, really.
I-I-I just felt very sorry for her.
♪♪ -The Queen turns a blind eye to her sister's problems.
And what's more, whenever Tony is in her presence, he is deceptively charming, even taking her for extravagant lunches whenever Margaret is away.
-I mean, Tony was quite clever and quite, um -- I was going to say, "Cunning," but perhaps that's not the right word.
But he knew.
He wanted -- He kept in with the Queen and the Queen Mother.
Absolutely.
I mean, they thought he was wonderful.
♪♪ -He was like that.
He was charming and yet a devil.
She couldn't stop that, and he -- I don't think he could stop it.
It was just in his nature.
♪♪ ♪♪ -The Queen escaped from the hectic round of public engagements to pay a private visit to a favorite uncle, the Duke of Windsor, at his home in the outskirts of Paris.
♪♪ -With her uncle, the former king, on his deathbed, the Queen decides to pay him a final visit.
♪♪ -The visit was intended as a private affair, though the French police mounted a massive security operation around the house.
It was then announced that, on doctor's orders, the Duke could not come outside and indeed could not leave his sitting room on the first floor of the house.
-He was terribly sick.
You know, he was -- He couldn't have weighed -- Maybe 80 pounds, if that, and wasn't eating at all.
The Duke was very, very concerned about his appearance.
But he insisted that he be sitting up in a chair, not in bed, and wearing clothes to hide any tubes, like an intravenous tube he had going.
-On his deathbed, the former king has one last request.
♪♪ He wants his wife, Wallis Simpson, to be elevated and given Her Royal Highness as a title -- HRH.
♪♪ The Queen has to decide whether to grant this final wish.
♪♪ -When she was small, Uncle David was going to be king, and then, suddenly, he wasn't.
They would have led a sort of life that the aristocracy used to lead, you know, with your horses and your dogs and, you know, fishing and shooting, probably a life that she probably would have preferred, really.
♪♪ -The king chose to put his marriage before the monarchy.
That forced this crisis upon our nation and upon, um, his brother.
We have to understand that background, I think, to understand the Queen.
♪♪ -The Queen said no.
She said no, even on that sad day.
-For the Duchess of Windsor, too, it's a significant occasion -- the first time that she's played hostess to the Queen.
♪♪ -It was, you know, breaking his heart, I think.
That's what he wanted.
That's what he wanted -- that title for her.
Not having that title for his wife was a slap in his face.
♪♪ -And judging from the farewells, it was a very relaxed occasion, with one notable formality.
The Duchess curtsied to Her Majesty during the farewells.
♪♪ -The old king dies 10 days later.
He and Wallis Simpson had put the monarchy in jeopardy.
[ Cheers and applause ] The Queen is determined that this won't happen again.
But her own children are about to fall in love with people deemed inappropriate.
[ Applause ] ♪♪ First, Princess Anne.
-The Princess is a specialist in the tough 3-day event that takes in a dressage with its 30 carefully prepared movements, 18 miles of cross-country riding, and, on the last day, arena showjumping.
♪♪ -She hates the trappings that goes with being a princess, but I once danced with her at a party in Belgium, and she's got "it."
I'll tell you, she exudes sex appeal.
It's quite extraordinary.
Just exudes it.
She got huge sex appeal.
It's very strange.
-Now, how much time have you got for training, and what do you do?
-Well, normally speaking, I just rely on the amount of riding I manage to do to keep me fit, but on that particular occasion, I didn't summon up enough energy to do some extra exercises.
-So you actually got down to early morning training?
-Um, actually, it was late at night.
[ Laughter ] -[ Laughs ] [ Laughter, applause ] ♪♪ -Andrew Parker-Bowles was very dashing.
He was a polo player.
He was a soldier.
He was just one of those rather glamorous men of that time.
♪♪ -But the rules of the Royal Family say that you can't marry a Catholic... ♪♪ ...and Parker-Bowles is a Catholic.
♪♪ [ Indistinct shouting ] And then Charles falls in love.
-♪ Na na na na, na na na na ♪ ♪ Na na na na na ♪ -Camilla is the most fun that you could ever wish to meet.
I mean, she was attractive and bubbly.
-♪ Na na na na na na ♪ -She was like a honeypot for a bee.
I mean, everybody wanted to buzz around her.
-♪ Na na na na, na na na na ♪ ♪ Na na na na na ♪ [ Indistinct shouting ] -But for the Queen, Camilla isn't a suitable option.
-♪ Na na na na, na na na na ♪ ♪ Na na na na na na ♪ -When Charles met Camilla... -♪ Na na na na, na na na na ♪ -...he was very young.
He was younger than Camilla.
♪♪ She wasn't a virgin.
-♪ Na na na na, na na na na ♪ -She was seen as girlfriend/mistress material.
But she was never really seen as somebody that could become a future queen.
-♪ Na na na na, na na na na ♪ ♪ Na na na na na ♪ -He was probably meant to marry something more -- Not that Camilla's not appropriate, but a more appropriate in quotes.
I mean, some Princess of Sweden or something, you know?
-♪ Na na na na, na na na na ♪ -And there's another complication.
Camilla's ex is none other than Andrew Parker-Bowles... -♪ Na na na na na na ♪ -...Anne's boyfriend.
-♪ Na na na na, na na na na ♪ ♪ Na na na na na ♪ -So both of the Queen's eldest children are unable to be with the person they love.
-♪ Na na na na, na na na na ♪ ♪ Na na na na na ♪ [ Bells chiming ] -Meanwhile, Margaret and Tony's marriage is failing, but both know that the idea of divorcing is unthinkable.
-♪ God save our gracious queen ♪ ♪ Long live our noble queen ♪ -When the Queen was first married, there were rumors that Prince Philip had affairs, but they denied the scandal and their marriage survived.
-I think everybody really will concede that on this of all days, I should begin my speech with the words "My husband and I."
[ Laughter, applause ] ♪♪ A marriage begins by joining man and wife together.
But this relationship between two people, however deep at the time, needs years.
For that, it must be held firm in the web of family relationships.
We had the good fortune to grow up in happy and united families.
♪♪ When the bishop was asked what he thought about sin, he replied with simple conviction that he was against it.
[ Laughter ] [ Applause ] If I am asked today what I think about family life after 25 years of marriage, I can answer with equal simplicity and conviction.
I am for it.
[ Laughter, applause ] ♪♪ -Anne must find a suitable husband... ♪♪ ...and Charles is to join the Navy.
♪♪ Margaret, however, has found a way to escape.
Her friend Lady Glenconner offers her a plot of land on the Caribbean island of Mustique, where she can build a house.
-Princess Margaret rang up and said to me, "Oh, Anne, is it true?
Have I really got a piece of land on Mustique?"
And I said, "Yes, ma'am.
Absolutely."
And so she said, "Well, can I come and see it?"
♪♪ That was the only house she owned, and she absolutely loved it.
♪♪ She always used to say, "You know, it made all the difference to my life, having something of my own."
She loved the Caribbean.
She liked the people.
She liked the music.
-The Queen makes a show of support to her sister by flying to the island for unofficial visits.
-The Queen came twice to see Princess Margaret's house.
The Queen was so charming and wanted to, you know, look to everywhere and bathrooms and cupboards and had a talk with a cook.
♪♪ It was lovely actually seeing them together.
I mean, Princess Margaret was very, very loyal to the Queen.
♪♪ -With her husband, Tony, thousands of miles away, Margaret conducts a secret affair with a Welsh gardener called Roddy Llewellyn.
♪♪ -I didn't quite like to say, "But he's so much younger than you."
[ Chuckles ] He looked rather like Tony.
He was the sort of the same, you know, small, and -- I don't know -- he had that sort of look.
But the difference was that he was so kind.
I think... she needed somebody to love her... be kind to her.
That's what he did.
♪♪ -Whilst Margaret has taken her life into her own hands, Charles dutifully follows the Queen's wishes and joins the Navy.
♪♪ -Sublieutenant Prince Charles reports to his new ship, HMS Minerva.
Putting to sea in a 6-month tour of the West Indies, being a prince doesn't excuse him from the normal duties and responsibilities of a naval officer on active service.
-In private letters home, Charles says he's finding life on the ship tedious.
♪♪ And while at sea, there's bad news.
♪♪ Camilla has got back together with Parker-Bowles.
♪♪ And they're getting married.
♪♪ ♪♪ As Camilla gets married, Charles is 4,000 miles away, representing the Queen in the Commonwealth.
♪♪ In an attempt to lift Charles's spirits, a polo game is organized.
[ Indistinct conversation ] -It's a goal.
-Hey!
-Yay!
[ Applause ] ♪♪ -In an extraordinary break from his normal demeanor, Charles storms off the pitch, claiming the announcer is mocking him.
♪♪ ♪♪ [ People chanting ] -Back home, Britain is in the grip of power cuts and unrest.
-What do we want?
-Fair pay!
-But a royal wedding lifts the nation's spirits.
[ Cheers and applause ] ♪♪ -The wedding of the decade.
In the Scottish coach, the Queen, the Queen Mother, the Prince of Wales, and Prince Andrew.
Her Royal Highness, the bride, with her father, the Duke of Edinburgh, in the glass coach.
♪♪ -Anne marries Captain Mark Phillips, who the Queen and Prince Philip approve of.
♪♪ Margaret and Tony are both seeing other people, but neither want to ask the Queen for a divorce.
♪♪ [ Bells chiming ] -I, Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise... -I, Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise... -...take thee, Mark Anthony Peter... -...take thee, Mark Anthony Peter... -...to my wedded husband.
-...to my wedded husband.
♪♪ -It all seems to be going the Queen's way.
Camilla is married and so out of the picture.
[ Cheers and applause ] Anne is married, too.
[ Cheers and applause continue ] The Royal Family is doing its duty.
[ Cheers and applause continue ] But just as things seem perfect, events take matters out of the Queen's control.
The press have found out about Margaret's affair with Roddy Llewellyn.
[ Camera shutters clicking ] ♪♪ -Sir.
[ Engine starts ] [ Clicking continues ] ♪♪ [ Paparazzi clamoring ] -Now Margaret's husband, Tony, makes his move.
♪♪ ♪♪ -I'm, uh... naturally... desperately sad... in every way... that this had to happen, and I would just like to say three things.
[ Camera shutter clicks ] Firstly, to pray for the understanding of our two children.
Secondly, to wish Princess Margaret every happiness for her future.
And, thirdly... to express... with the utmost humility... my love... ...admiration... and respect...
I will always have for her sister, her mother, and indeed her entire family.
-Lord Snowdon, is there any hope of a reconciliation?
-Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
-Thank you very much.
-Thank you, sir.
♪♪ -Thank you very much.
-Thank you, sir.
-He was so clever, wasn't he?
Oh-ho!
That was a -- That was masterclass.
It was entirely him.
I mean, he -- he -- he was the one that wanted the divorce.
She never had anything to do with the press, so it was easy for Tony.
He was always drip-feeding all the stories he wanted, you know?
-I would like to thank you for being here.
Thank you for being kind.
Gentleman, thank you.
-Thank you.
-He uses the scandal to get a divorce without getting the blame for it.
-This afternoon's shock royal announcement of another troubled chapter in the life of Princess Margaret.
-It's said that after living apart for two years, the two sides have agreed that their marriage should be ended formally.
-Do one with your mouth open.
-[ Speaks indistinctly ] -Roddy!
-Roddy!
-Yes?
-This way.
-Roddy decides to cash in on his newfound fame and releases an album.
-Roddy, now turn to your right.
-♪ A côté ♪ ♪ Des étoiles ♪ ♪ J'habite ♪ ♪ A deux pas ♪ ♪ Le ciel ♪ ♪ Toujours bleu ♪ -But his dulcet tones and crooning French love songs failed to capture the public's imagination... -♪ Votre visite ♪ -...and Princess Margaret retreats from the public eye.
In the years that follow, she spends more and more time in Mustique... ♪♪ [ People shouting in distance ] ...where she throws fancy dress parties... -Thank you very much.
Thank you, gentlemen.
No!
-...in which she gets to be the queen.
♪♪ -She felt that she was very much the second one.
It must have been difficult for her.
♪♪ -Princess Margaret is in hospital tonight after suffering what Buckingham Palace calls a mild stroke.
-In the last years of her life, Margaret's health deteriorates.
When she suffers a series of strokes, her sister, the Queen, rushes to her bedside.
-The Queen came to see Princess Margaret.
I happened to be with Princess Margaret.
And so I then went into the drawing.
I could hear the Queen going upstairs to her bedroom.
And then about two minutes later, I heard these footsteps coming down the stairs.
So I went out to see who it was, and there was the Queen.
So I said, "Ma'am, is there anything wrong?"
And she said, "Yes, there is."
And I said, "Well, what?"
She said, "Well, Margaret's listening to the 'The Archers,' and every time I say something, she just says, 'Shush!'"
So I said, "Well, I'll come up with you, ma'am."
So I went up, and I said to Miss Margaret, "The Queen's only got a short time," turning off her wireless, and, um -- and I poured them a cup of tea and then left them.
♪♪ -One of the last people to see her alive is the Archbishop of Canterbury.
-I heard she was dying, and had little conversation.
She was barely conscious.
But, you know, I've always learned over the years never to assume that that unconscious person can't hear you.
Very often they can.
So I talked to her quietly and said a prayer, anointed her with the oil, and she died soon after that, and, um -- and it was a lovely, moving occasion.
But she was sad.
There were moments when that sadness -- she expressed it.
Here is a woman who longed for love and commitment.
And the love of her life was forbidden for her.
♪♪ And there's a deep human sadness in that.
And we've got to learn the lessons from that.
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ -The man should sow his wild oats before settling down.
-He's been linked with almost as many sweet young things as Casanova.
♪♪ -Lord Mountbatten of Burma has been killed by an explosion on his yacht.
-[ Shouts ] -There was a new threat to the Queen's life -- the number-one target in the minds of the IRA.
