I don't know, I'm so sorry.

It doesn't matter why.

But I never thought she was out to hurt me.

Tell me about her state of mind.
She was agitated.
She told me she was talking to you and you kept going on about her mother.
We're pretty sure Brandi's mother was Shelley Moffatt.
A girl me and Marlene went to school with.
And Shelley disappeared.
-When you were kids?
-Yeah.
And she's never been found.
How come you never mentioned any of this before?

-[scoffs] Hire a nanny?
Have you seen The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, Seamie?
No, there's only one thing for it.
Hire more bar staff?
Sell the pub.
When I was talking to Brandi, I, um... I mentioned Nathan Williamson.
I said that he might be the father of Shelley's child.
So, Brandi thinks Nathan is her dad?
[knocking at door] Hiya.
Well, is Chloe OK?
She's fine.
Just planning a chill-out day with Ross.
So, what's been going on?
Uh... I-I'll go.
Yeah, and will you give Nathan Williamson a ring, see if he's had any visitors of late?
Yeah, will do.
[door closes] A few months ago, somebody started sending me and Marlene stuff, supposedly from long-lost Shelley.
We've been trying to work out who.
Yesterday, we found out that Brandi could be Shelley's daughter.
So, Brandi was sending you the stuff?
Well, that's what we're thinking I knew something was going on.
So, your friend went missing when you were kids.
Why didn't you just tell me?
[sighs] Cos it was too painful.
[knocking at door] Boss, Nathan's not answering his phone.
-Why don't we pay him a visit?
-Yeah.
[hammering] [Eve] Hello, Nathan.

It's been a long time.
Almost 20 years.

Uh, frame is rotten.
Just giving it a clean, managed to break the glass.
I heard yous got Nicole's baby back.
Yeah, that's right.
Safe and well, yeah.
That girl that took him, what... what was she playing at?
Funny enough, it's her we wanted to ask you about.
-Me?
-[Marlene] Yeah.
Do you remember Shelley Moffatt?
Shelley?
Just about.
You're not gonna tell me they've found her?
No, no.
Nothing like that, but... the girl who took Nicole's baby, we think she might be Shelley's daughter.
I never knew Shelley had a kid.
What's this got to do with me?
Look, there's no easy way to ask this.
Uh... Could you be this girl's father?
You mean, did I sleep with Shelley?
Well, did you?
No, I didn't.
I was going out with you.
Look, there's no way I'm this girl's dad!
-Fine.
-OK.
Thanks, Nathan.
Sorry for bothering you.

That's great.
Right, we'll get out of your hair then.
Good to see you, Eve.

I'm pretty sure he's lying.
Do you remember Claudia Preston had that big party?
The one I didn't go to cos my ma had grounded me?
Yeah, that's the one.
Well, I don't know if he saw me, but I had a pretty good view of Nathan and Shelley... kissing.
Well, actually, no, it was more than kissing.
They were all over each other.
So, my boyfriend was cheating on me and you didn't tell me because...?
Well, I was worried you'd shoot the messenger.
And, also... Eve, I was... I was with a girl when I saw them, so I couldn't.
Sorry.
-[Eve] OK.
-[sighs] So, what you're saying is there is a real possibility that Nathan is Brandi's father?
So, Nicole wants to sell the pub?
That's what she said.
Nah, she doesn't mean it.
It'll just be a reaction to the shock of that Brandi one taking the baby.
Right, I'm going to take this wee one out for some fresh air.
That's a good idea, love.
What we need is a garden.
Babies thrive on air and space.
And light.
Let's face it, there's not much of that in a dingy pub.
Seamie says you're thinking of selling this place.
Not thinking.
My mind's made up.
There's no way I can stand behind that bar and raise a child at the same time.
Our time in the Commodore is over.
I hope you'll put a good word in for me.
Sorry?
What?
With the new owners.
[sighs] Um, Sarge?
You might want to take a look at some of this stuff.
OK, where's this from?
Me and Callum searched Brandi's place.
There's loads of photos of this girl.
Shelley.
Is that the same Shelley that was supposed to have sent you flowers?
Yeah, cub.
It is, yeah.
Why does Brandi have so many photos of her?
Well, me and the Inspector think that Shelley was Brandi's mum.
[exhales] Right.
Um... we found this letter.
It's addressed to Brandi and signed "Granny".
You might want to give it a read.
Yeah.
Cheers, cub.
Yeah.
I had a life before I got together with that woman.
Lead singer of a country and western group.
We toured the length and breadth of the West Midlands.
And now she wants to lock me up in a semi-detached with a garden.
Can you see me mowing a lawn?
You're not in favour, then, of this selling-up notion?
[scoffs] Fair enough.
All we need to do is organise a bit of a hooley.
Get everybody to remind Nicole that she's the leading lady and this is her stage.
The penny will drop soon enough that she can't live without the place.
Do you know, Seamie, you've had some bad ideas in your time.
That is not one of them.
[taps countertop] I, uh, need to ask you something.
Shoot.
After Shelley went missing, did you go round to see her mother?
Yeah.
Why didn't you tell me?
How do you know about that?
Well, this is a letter Shelley's mother wrote to Brandi after Brandi tracked her down.
What does she say?
That you "had a cheek to turn up on her doorstep when it was your fault Shelley disappeared."
Eve, why on earth did you go round there?
What were you hoping to achieve?
[sighs] I don't know.
I suppose I just wanted to say I was sorry, you know?
About Shelley.
But her mum went mad.
She was horrible and nasty.
But why?
You're not to blame for Shelley going missing.
Well, it was grief talking.
Her lashing out.
I couldn't face running into that woman again, so... I had to get out of Port Devine.
Really?
That's why you moved away?
You didn't even say goodbye.
I know.
And I'm sorry, Marlene.
It's not me you should be apologising to, it's your mum.
My mum?
Why?
Well, you know, she's always thought you left Port Devine to get away from her.
And she's been breaking her heart ever since.
-[knocking at door] -Come in!
You need to hear this.
So, this fella in here picked up a hitchhiker earlier this morning.
It was only after he dropped her off, did he see Brandi's picture on the news.
Well, was it definitely Brandi he picked up?
Got to be.
The hitchhiker matches Brandi's description and she even talked about working in a pub.
Where'd he drop her off?
Way out of town, a place called Patrick's Peak.
Very close to Nathan Williamson's place.
Hm-hmm.
What time did your witness last see Brandi?
Um, just before nine.
OK, so that was about an hour before when we went round to see Nathan.
Eve, that broken window.
Brandi.
It could be Brandi.
Now what are you two talking about?
There's a possibility Brandi broke into Nathan Williamson's farm.
OK.
How far do you reckon Nathan's farm is from where me, you and Shelley were camping the night she went missing?
Half a mile, tops.
-You're not... -I don't know.
Callum, can you go through Barry Pettigrew's journals?
They're on Marlene's desk.
Just check if Nathan Williamson was interviewed at the time of Shelley's disappearance.
Yeah, sure.
Guys, are you gonna keep us in the loop here, or what?
Yeah, we're just wondering if Nathan had something to do with Shelley's disappearance.
Because, if he did, Brandi could be in serious danger.
So, if Shelley's Brandi's mum and Nathan's Brandi's dad... that means her dad could have killed her mum.
-I feel sorry for her, like.
-[phone rings] You've changed your tune.
Yeah.
Well, maybe I didn't get the full picture.
Callum.
Lads!
Barry did interview Nathan all those years ago.
He told Barry he was at a gig in Belfast the night Shelley went missing.
But he was lying.
Are you absolutely sure?
Yeah, one hundred percent.
So, the band that Nathan claimed he saw, they didn't perform that night.
It was a Sunday.
The venue never opened on a Sunday night.
Why did nobody check his statement at the time?
Because he wasn't of significant interest to the investigation.
Well, he is now.
Thanks, Callum.
Nathan doesn't have an alibi for the night Shelley disappeared.
[Ryan] Mr Williamson!
-[bangs on door] -It's the police!
Come to the door!
Do you wanna try the handle?
Police!
I take it Nathan lives alone.
Yep.
I think his parents are long dead.
[Ryan] Sarge!
She's out here!
[Marlene] We've found her!
Brandi!
-This is gonna hurt.
I'm sorry.
-[she whimpers] [Brandi cries] It's so good to see you.
I'm so sorry about the baby.
I'm so sorry.
Sorry!
It's OK.
We don't have to talk about that now.
What we need to do now, is we need to find Nathan.
Why did he tie you up?
I knew he was in the house, but he wasn't answering the door.
So I broke in.
I just wanted to know if he was my dad.
-Where's Nathan now?
-I don't know.
Just seen him.
He's heading up that way!
-What?
-You stay with Brandi!
What's up there?
-Uh, some old farm buildings.
-Go.
-Can we get a car up there?
-You are joking me, right?
What happens now?
I take you to the police station.
Not yet.
Please.
I need to know what happened to my mum.
[Marlene] Nathan!
Please.
There's no need for this.
I'll talk to him.
Nathan!
What's this all about?
Haven't you worked it out yet?
I need you to tell us.
Shelley turned up at the house that night.
She told me she'd had my baby.
And her mum forced her to give the baby away.
Shelley was desperate to get our baby back.
She screamed at me that I had to help her.
So, you are Brandi's father?
Yes.
I am.
-It was an accident.
-What was, Nathan?
Shelley was in such a state.
Crying, shouting!
We were arguing at the top of the stairs.
She started hitting me.
And... I pushed her away.
She fell.
By the time I got to the bottom of the stairs, she was dead!
Nathan, no!
Nathan!
You're not the only one who's responsible for Shelley's death.
How do you work that out?
Why do you think she was so upset that night?
I was young, Nathan, but I wasn't stupid.
I could see how you and Shelley looked at each other.
That night, me and Marlene and Shelley were camping, Marlene went out to get some water and... and I took my chance.
I called Shelley everything.
Every stinking word I could think of.
I said she was a dirty slag.
So, you see, Nathan, that's why Shelley ran away that night.
It was me.
That's why she was so upset.
She fell down the stairs, Eve.
You didn't kill her.
I should have rung 999.
[Eve] Why didn't you?
My mum was in really poor health.
If I'd gone to prison, it would have killed her.
There's no excuse.
I... I wanted to save my own skin.
I hate myself for what I did!
For what I didn't do!
I've spent the last 20 years hating myself!
Jumping off here and now, it'll be a release!
[officers shout] Stop!
Stop!
Don't you dare!
I need to know where my mum is!
Please.
You owe me that at least.
Nathan?
Nathan, look at me.
She's right.
We all need to know where Shelley is.
OK.
I'll show you.
Stay there.
[Eve] Slowly.
You're OK, Nathan.
Just watch your feet there.
And over.
That's it.
You understand what I have to do, don't you?
Nathan Williamson, I'm arresting you on suspicion of... [Eve continues indistinctly] I buried Shelley under this tree.
It all happened so long ago.
I'd nearly convinced myself it was some kind of bad dream.
When I saw you in the bar last night... you've got her eyes.
It all come flooding back to me.
I'm so sorry.
Please... don't hate me.
Come on.
Let's go.
I'm really sorry for everything that I've done.
How did you get Shelley's friendship bracelet?
Her mum?
Yeah.
She sent it to me in a letter.
Told me you two were to blame for what happened to Shelley.
Aren't you going to arrest me for taking Nicole's baby?
[Eve] Yeah.
-Sergeant.
-[Marlene] Yeah.
Brandi McClure, I am arresting you on suspicion of kidnapping.
You do not have to say anything, but I must caution you if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court, it may harm your defence.
If you do say anything, it may be given in evidence.
Can you look after her, cub?
[Marlene sighs] To think she's been here... all this time.
Poor Shelley.
[sighs] What's all this?
Just your friends and neighbours clubbing together to show you how much you matter to them.
Oh, I get it.
You're turning on the emotional blackmail so that I'll change my mind about selling this place.
Well, good luck with that.
Nicole, can we not talk about this?
I'd love to stop and chat, but this wee baby's bum needs changing.
If you'll excuse me.
[sighs] Seamie, all of this, it's not gonna work.
So, what do you suggest?
It's time to get the big guns out.
Where's my guitar?
How long is this gonna take?
We're just waiting on transport to run you up to Belfast now.
OK.
I suppose this is goodbye.
I'm gonna go to prison, aren't I?
I don't know.
I just wanted to say that, um... Um... I did care for you, Ryan.
Before I messed everything up.
You cared for me?
Yeah.
I still do.
[sighs] Shame I didn't tell you before.
And now it's too late.
I love you, Brandi.
And it's not too late.
[chuckles] What are you gonna do?
Visit me in prison?
Wait here.
Oh.
I can't really leave, can I?
Nathan Williamson?
Oh, I never would have thought he would have that in him.
He swears it was an accident.
And you were right about Shelley being pregnant.
Hmm.
I have a nose for that sort of thing.
Always have had.
Marlene thinks that you blame yourself for me leaving Port Devine when I was 17.
Where would she get a daft idea like that?
I know.
I told her she got the wrong end of the stick.
I said Lois Dunlop knows fine rightly I left because I was so upset after Shelley disappeared.
Mind you, I'm sure there's plenty folk would say that... [chuckles] I am hard work, a bit of an old battle-axe.
They would.
But I'm not one of them.
It broke my heart to leave you, Mum.
Sure, I'm just glad to have you back.
Something catch your eye, Seamie?
Hmm.
I was just thinking, that Lois Dunlop, she's a fine-looking woman.
[Clint] She is indeed.
She's single.
So are you.
Why don't you go for it?
I might just do that.
I was gonna give you that... the night that you dumped me.
-Is that what I think it is?
-[Ryan] Yeah.
It's an engagement ring.
No matter what happens, I want us to be together.
[laughs] This is mad!
Yeah.
Brandi McClure... I love you.
Will you marry me?
Of course I will.
[laughs] And... I love you too.
[cries] [music plays in the background] [Seamie] Thanks for helping with all of this.
Ah, well.
That's what friends are for.
Well... I was wondering if we could become more than friends.
Sorry?
Mr McCarthy!
What sort of woman do you think I am?
We're getting on so well.
And you think that that gives you the right to stick your tongue down my throat?
Never heard of buying a girl dinner first?
[Marlene chuckles] Here he is.
All snuggly and warm.
And, uh, am I forgiven?
For letting Brandi take him?
Of course.
Not that I'm ever going to let him out of my sight ever again.
Aye, so, what's this I hear about you wanting to sell up?
Well, I'm just being practical, Marlene.
There's no way that I can run this place and look after this absolute dote at the same time.
I've written a wee poem to honour Baby Barry here.
Of course.
But it's also a homage... Nicole, to your place at the heart of this community.
I'd like to read it now.
Please.
Um, somebody stop him.
Do your worst, Seamie.
It's not going to make a pick of difference.
[Clint] Seamie!
Turn that music off will you?
[clears throat] What's with the guitar and the ten-gallon hat?
I was wearing this hat the night I met my wife.
Wasn't wearing it by the end of the night though, yeow!
-[laughter] -Clint!
Stop!
Anyway, I'm wearing it this evening because I've written a new verse for our special song.
The song you wrote for me?
Divine Lady Devine?
Divine Baby Devine.
[Clint plays guitar] That is clever, right enough.
You're our very own angel Our bundle of joy We love you from Lurgan To sweet Ballintoy Baby so lovely Baby so fine We love you dearly Baby Devine [cheering and applause] Nicole, I want to remind you that this wee man has three parents.

Am I right?
[all] Yes!
Me and Callum will look after our son.
And that's a solid-gold promise.
-Am I right, Callum?
-You certainly are.
So, can we persuade you to change your mind?
What's the Commodore without the Queen Bee, hey?
[cheering] Oh, Clint!
Of course I don't want to sell the pub.
I'm so sorry.
It's just... when this wee man went missing, I've just... I've never felt pain like it.
I know.
I know.
Right, everybody join in for the last verse!
